Pork in a Box

Commonly Asked Questions

What do you mean by the term that your pigs are Free Range?

Our pigs are free to run around 100% of the time.  Australia is yet to give a legal definition of free range and until this happens people will continue to use the words 'free range' when in reality their pigs aren't free range at all. Our piglets are born in a nest that their mother makes out round bales of hay or from grass in the paddocks. When the piglets are weaned, they are put into a different paddock. At all stages in their lives they can run around and sleep under the stars (if they choose not to sleep under their shelters).

Who kills and cuts your Pork?

We are currently using a small Quality Accredited country abattior and butcher.  We take our pig to the facility so we know loading and unloading is as stress free as possible. The pork has a stamp on it which indicates that it has been killed at a Registered, Quality Assured Abattior this may appear as a pink mark once the stamped area has been cut up.  From the abattior it is delivered to our butcher for cutting and then we go and pack our meat at the butchers fresh and ready for your family.

Why does your meat have more fat on it?

Our meat has more fat on it as our animals have more freedom and the fat also helps them to stay warm in winter.  The fat adds a succulent flavour to the meat.  The fat also has a higher percentage of good fats in it. If you dont like fat on your meat - eat the meat and leave the fat on your plate.

How does eating Rare Breed Meat ensure that the breed survives?

By creating a demand for a product you are ensuring that there is a market and need for the pork and as a result for the Tamworth Breed. Rare Breed Collections or Pets that are Rare Breed Animals will not ensure that this breed survives. A product that is sought after has to continue to be produced. In short if you create a demand for our meat, we will be able to continue to breed pure bred Tamworths to keep up with supply both to become Pork and to breed with. If an animal does not have a purpose it will become extinct. Tamworths are not used in conventional piggeries these days as they are too slow growing and have a little extra fat and do not like being kept indoors.

Are You Organic?

No we are not organic and do not have organic status. We have looked into Organic Status and do not see any benefits of this for our farm or for our consumers.  We do not give our pigs antibiotics unless ordered for a specific purpose by our vet and do not feed our animals any chemicals or hormones and all grain is GM Free. We would like to describe our pigs as naturally grown. We treat our animals like a mother would treat her child.  If they are sick they are taken to the Dr (vet) and treatment is decided upon with consultation with the vet.  The welfare of our animals is our no 1 priority.

Your Pork is so moist and full of flavour...is it moisture infused?

NO!! - The taste is all the hard work of the pigs and we believe the taste comes from numerous factors. We believe that foremost the lifestyle and stress free living of our pigs is reflected in the succulence of the meat. Also the meat has a bit more fat which encourages flavour and the animals are slower growing. Tamworth's are also renowned for the quality and taste sensation of the pork that they produce.

Pork in a Box - Free Range Pork from Farrow to Finish

" GREAT FAMILY VALUE!!! - For those who want to save money, support a rare breed, tantilise their taste buds and eat ethically produced pork."

Simply put, you can purchase half a pig or a full pig that is cut up by a qualified butcher and is cryavaced and packed into a box ready for you to take home and put in your freezer. Cryvaccing means not only convience but also that the meat takes up a smaller amount of freezer space. Most boxes are around the 15 - 20 kg size. This is not a 'home job' set up. We are not butchers, we specialize in growing happy pigs. We leave the meat side up to those who know what they are doing. We transport the animals to a kill facility. The carcess is then delivered to our butchers for slicing. The meat has a stamp on it that can only been provided by Registered Kill Facilities. This is your reassurance that the animal has been killed in a registered and Quality Assured Facility.

We can deliver if we have a number or orders in the one area or pick up from the farmers markets.. We keep delivery costs to a minimum to ensure the meat remains affordable.
